In a conversation with my husband recently over morning coffee, we discussed both the rise and fall of our own emotional awareness. When our emotions are most likely to overtake us like a canoe gone too far out into Lake Michigan and what helps us keep these vessels afloat each day.

It was interesting how much boiled down to connection for each of us, and I notice this in the therapy room too. Even when we practice self-compassion, one of the hardest skills for anyone to begin and to continue, we are connecting within ourselves. From a spiritual perspective, self compassion says, “God is not far off, even far off, no matter how much water we find ourselves baling from this boat and how far away the shore.”
